The 4th Annual Rosarito Beach International Mariachi & Folklórico Festival, a benefit for the local Boys and Girls Club, will be held from October 2nd through the 6th at the historic Rosarito Beach Hotel. The event…already Mexico’s 2nd largest encuentro (after Guadalajara’s International Mariachi and Charro Festival, founded in 1994)…features an historic occasion for the host city. El mejor del mundo, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, will be performing there for the first time ever in its fabled 115 year, five-generations, epic musical odyssey.
This year’s Festival is actually seven separate events in one. It all begins on Wednesday morning October 2nd when upwards of 500 young musicians, vocalists, and dancers from Mexico, the United States, and Canada will be attending a three-day Talleres (Workshop) taught by members of Vargas, the Grammy-Award winning Mariachi Divas, and other internationally renowned maestros. Wednesday evening everyone will be enjoying the premier screenings in Mexico of three award winning mariachi –themed films: ‘Canto de Familia,’ ‘A Mexican Sound,’ and ‘Mariachi High.’ Thursday evening, October 3rd, will feature a unique invitation-only opportunity for philanthropic aficionados to experience ‘Dining with the Stars’ at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Casa Blanca. Friday evening, October 4th, in addition to the Gala Opening Ceremonies, will feature an exciting Student Showcase AND professional performances featuring Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson (AZ) accompanying the 13 year old vocalista Gabriela Sepulveda from San Jose, CA; Mariachi Voz de America from Los Angeles, CA performing with Junko Seki, originally from Chiba, Japan; and Baja’s best, Mariachi Aguila de Tijuana (MX) (who have represented their state at the Guadalajara event for the past seven years) appearing with this year’s ‘Baja Idol’ winner, Ariel de la Rosa.
The weekend (October 5th-6th) will feature a unique two-day (10:00 AM-3:00 PM) professionally adjudicated Competencia featuring Mexican and American performers in mariachi, vocals, and folklórico competing for their share of $10,000 in prize money ‘bookended’ around a Saturday evening Concierto Extravaganza. It will open with great performances from Olga Flores & Friends, featuring Mariachi Sonido de Mexico; Angel Lopez, from Puerto Rico, and his mega-hit, ‘A puro dolor’; and conclude with in-concert appearances by the Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas, including their original ‘Rosarito’ (which has been submitted for Grammy consideration) and performances by several surprise guests, followed by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán in a show-stopping finale. Both headliners will also be featuring dance performances by Ballet Foklórico Tapatio (from Tucson) and Rosarito’s own Ballet Folklórico Ixtlazihuatl. Sunday afternoon’s Closing Ceremonies will include the presentation of the Awards as well as the classic ‘La Negra’, made all the more poignant since it was composed by Silvestre Vargas and Ruben Fuentes, two of the driving forces behind Vargas’ international success.

All of the net proceeds from the Festival will contribute to the $1 million PLUS needed to construct the Club de Ninos y Ninas Seccion Rosarito (Boys and Girls Club of Rosarito). Upon completion, the new Club, located in the north Rosarito suburb of Lucio Blanco, will provide a myriad of recreational and educational activities for the area's children. Tours of both the presently operating temporary club in Rosarito Shores and the new, under construction, permanent site are being arranged for all of those who would like to view the progress that has been made in just the past year.
Webster's New World Dictionary defines nonpareil as unequaled, unrivaled, peerless. This Festival and its purpose for being seem to be perfectly described by this singular word.
