Nonito Donaire, Jr. updates regarding his left fist; says he won't change gloves

I spoke to Nonito Donaire, Jr. and his wife Rachel recently after their trip to LA to see a hand specialist as recommended by his promoter Bob Arum.

Donaire's MRI and X-Ray results were negative and was advised to rest his hand for at least 3 weeks. Donaire popped a nerve which caused all the bleeding that was seen all over his handwrap during the HBO telecast.

One of the reasons Donaire told me why his hand gets injured was due to cutting weight in the past which does a number on his joints and muscles. He says he plans to do more hand exercises to strengthen his fist now that he is also moving up in weight.

Something he won't do, however, is change the gloves he wears. Donaire told me that he had also injured his hand before using gloves with more padding, and that he is comfortable with the Everlast gloves he uses.

Donaire also said that they are open to explore other methods in handwrapping and talk to experts to help prevent further damage on his fists, but at the end of the day, believes it's simply all about landing his punches more accurately and on his opponents' faces, and avoid hitting their heads.

Recovery is believed to be normal, and in time for the 4-division World Champ and new WBO jr. featherweight champ to fight Jorge Arce sometime this spring.
