What happens to pets in times of natural disasters?

In the wake of the F3 tornado that struck Tupelo, Mississippi on April 28, leaving many people and pets homeless, the International Fund for Animal Welfare was contacted to assist the local Tupelo-Lee Humane Society that is continuously taking in dogs in the wake of the tornado.

Founded in 1969, IFAW has projects in more than 40 countries rescuing animals, working to prevent animal cruelty, and advocating for the protection of wildlife and habitats.

IAFW selected Animal Lifeline, a Warrington, PA non-profit that provides animal rescue and disaster response, to help transport some of the dogs back to the PA/NJ area. This will help make room at the Tupelo shelter to temporarily house animals for families who lost their homes.

Just today, Animal Lifeline delivered 53 dogs from Tupelo to PA and NJ shelters and rescues, which will provide veterinary care and find the animals new homes. These include Last Chance Ranch, Lancaster County SPCA, Women's Humane Society, Wet Nose Rescue, and Animal Alliance of New Jersey.

Animal Lifeline is now organizing a second transport from Tupelo later this week, with a destination of Washington Animal Rescue League in Washington, D.C. and St. Hubert's in NJ.

Animal Lifeline says they are honored to be chosen as one of the organizations to work in partnership with IAFW.

"We are trained to perform these rescue missions, but moreover we love what we do. When natural disasters strike like this, we are always ready and prepared to deploy on a moment’s notice."
-Denise Bash, executive director, Animal Lifeline

Our sincere thanks to all the organizations who helped these animals in the aftermath of this disaster, and our deepest sympathy to both humans and animals who tragically lost their lives.
