The Department of Defense announced today, Sept. 14, the death of an Army Soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He passed yesterday at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston in Texas.
Home of record for Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr., 24, is listed as Fontana, Calif.
Staff Sgt. Thomas died of wounds suffered during a non-combat related incident on April 21, 2013, in Maiwand, Afghanistan.
The nature of the incident was not released by the Army and there was no mention of other soldiers who were injured or killed in this same incident. The Army, however, posted the loss of Pfc. Barrett L. Austin, 20, of Easley, S.C., who was killed on April 21.
Staff Sgt. Thomas was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Fort Bliss, Texas.
