Nominations sought for Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee

If you want to serve on the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee, you've got until Monday, July 7 to apply. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is taking applications for vacancies on the committee, which advises the Department of Commerce on all fishing and marine life matters. The committee consists of between 15 and 21 members with expertise in various aspects of fishing and marine resources, including the recreational and commercial sectors, plus academia, marine resource organizations, Indian tribes environmental groups, etc.

Members are expected to attend two meetings a year plus serve on subcommittees. Lobbyists, members of regional fishery management councils and state and federal employees are not eligible. Members receive no compensation except travel expenses. The committee works on strategies for sustaining marine resources, including reviving depleted stocks.

The committee officially expired on Jan. 18 and was reestablished by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration on April 2. The new terms will begin this fall. The committee was first formed on Dec. 28, 1970. Members serve three year terms and no one may serve for more than two consecutive terms.

NMFS will consider nominations with a postmark or email date stamp of July 7 or earlier. Applications shoudl inclde a cover letter, resume and up to three letters of recommendation.
