According to the Canadian Press, former Jack Adams Trophy winner Ted Nolan of Garden River, Ontario has been named the head coach of Team Latvia, with only three years before the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
Nolan, who is a member of the Ojibwa First Nation, spent the last two years working closely with the Rochester Americans as their Vice President of Hockey Operations. Prior to that, he coached two years each with the Buffalo Sabres (1995-97) and New York Islanders (2006-08).
In 1997, Nolan had the interesting distinction of being fired after being named the NHL Coach of the Year.
Currently, Latvia is ranked 12th in the International Ice Hockey Federation rankings, the same place they finished at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy and at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Their best World Championship finish was seventh-- at the 2004 World Hockey Championships in Prague, Czech Republic and the 2009 World Hockey Championship in Bern, Switzerland.
