Nobrow Coffee and Tea Company, 315 E Broadway, is located in a large warehouse that holds a café, art gallery and office. Artists can rent one of the back spaces to do their work and hope to catch the eye of owner Joe Evans, who features local artwork in the café. The large café seems somewhat empty, however, with only half a dozen small tables, a crowded counter and shelves full of games. Apparently it works because customers have been enjoying Nobrow’s free internet and quality coffee for five years.
You can buy any of the artwork on the walls as well as some other random merchandise such as shoes next to the game shelf. But be warned that, although they make the café bright and welcoming, the large front windows let in a lot of sunlight. With no ceiling fans, Nobrow is no escape from the summer heat. Try sitting out on the patio, or check out the café’s new extended hours on MySpace for a cool nighttime experience.
Nobrow is a unique café that cares about serving good coffee and supporting local artists. Also look for occasional concerts and other events on the company’s website.
