I am so sad to report that Kevin Sharp has passed away.
This one hits particularly hard as I was a fan of his work. I followed his story, his fight with cancer and on this Easter Day, I feel compelled to write this story even though I am not supposed to be working today. How could I not honor him by saying a few words?
Kevin was a warrior. In 1989, Kevin was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma which is a form of blood cancer. He was given two years of chemo and radiation which caused him to permanently loose his hair but it saved his life.
During his cancer fight and through the Make a Wish foundation Kevin was introduced to legendary music producer David Foster. Kevin did a demo and the producer passed it on to some industry connections he had in Nashville.
As a result of those actions, Kevin signed a deal and released his most successful album, “Measure of a Man,” which was certified gold. On that album was the mega hit song, “Nobody Knows,” which sky-rocketed Kevin to the top of the charts.
That song is why I became familiar with Kevin and his work. I learned his story and followed his journey and struggles. Kevin continued to cut albums and signed with a few different labels along the way.
Kevin’s last single would turn out to be, “Let me rock you to Sleep,” which was released in 2011.
It is being reported by Billboard and other reputable media outlets that Kevin passed away on Saturday evening, (April 19th). He was 43.
Kevin loved the Make a Wish Foundation and in fact, they have created on his website a link where you can make a donation in Kevin’s honor. Even in death he is doing what he can to help his beloved foundation and he is paying it forward. You can send a card to the family at: Kevin Sharp, c/o Sue Valdkamp, P.O. Box 54646, Cincinnati, Ohio 45254
All cards will be forwarded to the family. A memorial service is being planned in Nashville.
