The question for all to ponder is, "Noah's Ark and the Flood : What does the Bible teach?" Man has over 270 legends about the Flood but none truly match the Bible's account in Genesis chapters 6 through 8. But nevertheless evidences of the worldwide Flood can be found in these stories and historic records of many cultures around the world. But what does the Bible teach? The Bible says the Ark was about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Genesis 6:14-15 says, "Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits." A cubit in Hebrew and Greek both have the meaning (forearm as a unit of measure). We really do not know the size of Noah's forearm. Noah's forearm from his elbow to the end of his longest finger, could of been a lot longer than 18 inches or a lot shorter. But for the sake of argument lets say it was 18 inches. Now lets go back to the dimensions of the Ark. Length : 300 cubits (300 cubits x 18 inches = 5400 inches), 5400 inches divided by 12 inches equals 450 feet long. Breadth (width) : 50 cubits (50 cubits x 18 inches = 900 inches), 900 inches divided by 12 inches equals 75 feet wide. Height : 30 cubits (30 cubits x 18 inches = 540 inches), 540 inches divided by 12 inches equals 45 feet high : Dimensions : 450' x 75' x 45'. Noah's Ark was huge, and more than 525 rail cars made up the capacity of the boat with well enough room for all the land animals God placed in it. No fish or other marine animals were on the ark.
Next the shape of the Ark was like a barge-shaped boat that was completely enclosed. It was not a ship with sails, rudders or any other rigging. It was extremely stable (more stable than modern ships) and made to float. God was in control of the Ark. This barge-shaped boat consisted of 3 decks, a large door in the side of the boat, and one small window (just big enough to let out a small bird (raven and dove: Genesis 8:6-11) or to see what was going on outside). "A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it" (Genesis 6:16).
For added durability the Ark was made of gopher wood and was sealed with pitch inside and out. "Make thee an ark of gopher wood: rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch" (Genesis 6:14).
Noah's Ark floated for 150 days before settling on the mountains of Ararat. "The fountains also of the deep and windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; And the waters returned from off the earth continually : and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat" (Genesis 8:2-4). It would be a total of 371 days from the start of the Flood until the end, before God told them to leave the Ark (Genesis 8:13-19). All people living today are descendents from Noah's three sons : Shem, Ham, and Japheth (Genesis 9:1).
The Flood according to the Bible was a worldwide flood that killed every living thing that breathed air with lungs. "And behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die" (Genesis 6:17).
"And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark" (Genesis 7:23).
What can Noah's Ark teach us today ?
Noah was a man of faith : "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house: by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith" (Hebrews 11:7).
By faith is how a Christian pleases God : "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6).
There is only one door into the Ark : "A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it" (Genesis 6:16).
Jesus is the door to salvation: "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture" (John 10:9).
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).
Noah was safe in the Ark : "And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life. And they that went in male and female of flesh, as God commanded him: and the LORD shut him in" (Genesis 7:15-16).
Jesus will keep you safe for all eternity, for He loves all who come unto Him in salvation : "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord " (Romans 8: 38-39).
Noah obeyed God : "Thus did Noah according to all that God commanded him, so did he" (Genesis 6:22).
Jesus said if we love Him, we will obey His commandments : "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me : And I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand" (John 10:27-28).
The global Flood formed most of the fossil record in months, destroying evolution's millions of years. Rapid burial of sediments by lots of water in a short period of time produced these fossils, and not by gradual formation (uniformitarianism) over millions of years. The specimens had to be rapidly covered with sediments or they would of decayed before having a chance to fossilize.Fossilization works fast when the right conditions : lots of water to create muddy sediments, and rapid burial like what happened during the Flood of Noah's day.
If not saved, come to Jesus today! And receive Him as your Lord and Saviour! "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).
"(For he saith, I heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time: behold now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2).
