Joakim Noah was excused from Friday's practice to attend to personal matters.
Coach Tom Thibodeau said the center had returned to his hometown of New York for "bereavement."
Noah's status for Sunday's Game 1 tip-off against the Washington Wizards isn't expect to change and the team is hopeful that he will return on Saturday where the Bulls have a scheduled practice.
The Tribune reported that Noah has been granted an open-ended absence to deal with the personal matter, which is an off-the-court issue.
