For the first time, no city in the United States made the Top Ten destinations list according to TripAdvisor. In an article titled “Big shift in TripAdvisor destination favourites”(sic)* in today’s UK edition of Travelmole, the Top Ten 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Destinations winners in the world are:
1. Istanbul
2. Rome
3. London
4. Beijing
5. Prague
6. Marrakech
7. Paris
8. Hanoi
9. Siem Reap
10. Shanghai

Last Year New York was number 2 on the list, closely followed by San Francisco in the number 7 spot. This year they ranked 12th and 25th respectively. The United States was not alone in losing favor with world travelers. Both France and Spain destinations fell in the rankings. Paris, last year’s most popular destination, fell to seventh place, while Barcelona, which came in fifth last year, this year ranked 15th.

Another favorite, Sydney, also dropped down this year from number 12 to 22, while London alone held steady keeping its number 3 position for the second year in a row.

Meanwhile Asian destinations rose sharply in the rankings, with Beijing, Hanoi, and Shanghai all breaking into the top 10 for the first time, as Istanbul jumped 11 places to become the number one destination in the world.

TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay said: "It is interesting to see traditionally popular destinations Paris, New York and Barcelona drop down the rankings.”

According to TripAdvisor, “Travellers' Choice Destinations are based on the millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.”

Note: British spellings were retained from the original UK document. For US sensibilities, travelers has one "l", and there is no "u" in favorites.
