No Senate support for auditing the Fed

Chaunce Shrewsbury local “End the Fed” coordinator is asking fellow Utahns to contact Orrin Hatch  and Robert Bennett  to urge them to cosponsor S. 604: Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009 introduced by Bernard Sanders.

Currently S. 604 doesn't have any cosponsors, while the House version H.R. 1207: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009 introduced by Ron Paul has 179.   Out of the 179 cosponsors Jason Chaffetz and Rob Bishop have already signed on.

Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent, gained the respect of many conservatives when he became an internet hit cross examining Ben Bernanke.  Sanders demanded to know which banks received TARP funds, but Bernanke refused to provide the information.  Sanders warned Bernanke he was going to introduce a bill requiring the disclosure -- S. 604 is the result.

Sanders also  voted against the “Bailout.”

Another man who is calling for an inquiry into the structure of the Fed is former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.  Spitzer was well known for fighting bank and Wall Street corruption, until his own bank flagged his payments to call girls  and reported him to the FBI.

On May 12th Eliot Spitzer did an interview with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.  In this interview Spitzer states Timothy Geithner, now US Treasury Secretary, was appointed to be head of the New York Fed by the very banks the Fed is supposed to be regulating.  He goes on to say:

There are supposed to be public voices on the board of the New York Fed.  The Fed is a sort of an odd entity.  The Fed is a quasi governmental, quasi private entity.  It's board members chosen partly by the Board of Governors of the Fed in Washington, partly by the banks that control the Fed.  The public representative, I'm going to try not to strike too close to home here, the public representative chosen by the banks--public--Jeffrey Immelt.  The chairman of GE.  Also the chairmen of this company -- but wait a minute -- he is the public voice who's bonds are being guaranteed by the Fed.
