At this point it feels like it's been a long time coming, Lifetime's longest running series, "Army Wives" has essentially been on the bubble for the past few seasons with fans left dangling in doubt with each season finale.
On Sept. 24, 2013 the doubt and wondering officially ended as Lifetime announced that "Army Wives" has been cancelled and will not return for an eighth season. Many thought the loss of several original cast members along with the massive cast reboot of season 7 was simply the unfortunate writing on the wall, so while a permanent deployment might not be entirely unexpected, it's still a bitter pill for fans to swallow.
Often when a series gets news after what everyone assumed to be a season finale and not series, fans are left in the lurch. Fortunately that's not the case here. Lifetime recognizes the gem they had in "Army Wives" and will give our ladies a proper sendoff with a "two-hour retrospective special with cast members that will air early next year," according to the "Army Wives" official blog.
Lifetime's Executive Producer and General Manager, Rob Sharenow, had this to say about this bittersweet television farewell:
"There is no denying how special 'Army Wives' has been to both Lifetime and the television landscape," says Rob Sharenow. "By taking on a very relevant and timely issue, it has brilliantly captured the challenges our military families endure and the bravery they and their loved ones display while serving our country."
He added, "It has been an honor to be the home of 'Army Wives.' We also want to thank 'Army Wives'' passionate legion of fans and everyone involved with the series...Without their dedication, effort and loyalty, 'Army Wives'' seven wonderful seasons would not have been possible; and for that we are very grateful."
So there it is, we have to say goodbye to Sunday evenings with one fine group of ladies (plus Roland and the other hubbies); we've been through it all with them: deaths of children and one of their own, injured spouses, PTSD, health issues, deployment, adultery, adoption, suicide...But through it all, enduring friendships, strong women, and a respectful look at the bravest of the brave.
Stay tuned for more information on the "Army Wives" farewell special coming our way early in 2014.
