No reason for Paul McCartney fans to be 'Glee'-ful just yet

There has been a flurry of reports in the last couple of days, like this one from the New York Daily News, that say Paul McCartney has sent Beatles songs to the  creator of the hit show "Glee." Those reports make it all but sound like a deal has been sealed for use of either Beatles or McCartney songs on the show.

Our sources tell us a slightly different story. We're told the show has indeed been in touch with McCartney, but nothing is certain as of yet and it's not a done deal at this point.

Well I for one hope it happens. Glee is a nifty little show. Very funny. And it makes great use of both older songs and new ones, introducing kids to music that they wouldn't otherwise hear.

I think the Glee cast could do great work with McCartney songs like Every Night or Let Me Roll It or, heck, a Glee cast performance of Uncle Albert would be fab ("Hands across the water" -- "Water!").

One other thought: Say Say Say would be a great song for the show's two romantic leads to sing to one another. Come on Paul, make it happen.

I thought they already did a Beatles song, "Hello Goodbye"? It was in oen of their ads awhile ago. Am I wrong?

Can't stand the show...and the Glee creator has said Paul HAS been in touch and sent him a mix tape and song suggestions. It was just on one of the infotainment shows, the creator on camera.

Melody: "Glee" is naturally trying to pump up this story, but according to my sources, it's a little early to do that.

Makes no difference to me, even if they do a Paul or Beatles show I won't watch. Overrated program...just as Across the Universe was overrated (I couldn't sit through the whole thing).

This is how the media machine works these days. Glee's producer gives an interview or two, mentions Paul, and then all of these Web sites and blogs -- desperate for more and more news, repackage the same story over and over. What's fun is to watch how inaccurate the story gets by the time the gossip sites pick it up in places like India. The vast majority of these Web sites NEVER do any original reporting. They just steal the story from someone else.

As for Glee, I thought it was overrated, too. Then I actually watched it, and laughed my you-know-what off. It's funny and ridiculous and occasionally stupid. It's also really entertaining. Plus, I think it's great the way the show introduces kids to lesser-known songs. But I don't want them to do Beatles' songs. I want them to do some of Paul's solo songs. Beatles' songs get enough attention.

I thought the show would be just another show aimed at teens by people who thought kids were stupid. It is actually a fun show with some touching moments thrown in. Nice episode repeated recently where the nasty coach of the cheerleaders is forced to have tryouts for new members. A girl with Downs tryouts and she tells her she makes the team. The chorus director wants to know why she did it certain that she will make fun of the girl. She is shown being harsh to the girl during workouts (she is harsh to everyone) and she tells the chorus director she is treating the girl jsut like everyone else, because the girl wants to be like everyone else. At the end of the episode the coach is seen going to visit her older sister at a group home - who has Downs. You can she she adores her sister.
Plus, this show has gotten kids interested in music for themselves. That is never a bad thing.

Liz: The comments were apparently made by the "Glee" creator at the Television Critics Association fall preview junket, which is an annual thing TV critics attend with promotion and interviews set up so they can be written about. Of course, a lot of what the critics write is what's fed them. In this case, he's trying to promote the show, but he's also pumping up the McCartney contact. Not to say that McCartney won't be featured somehow with "Glee," but it's too bad more writers are falling for this so quickly and not getting the other side of the story. It looks more glamorous to say McCartney's been in touch and leave it at that.
