Pemiscot County residents will be taking to the polls on Apr. 8, 2014 to elect all five board members of the Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems, (PMHS),Board of Directors. Sign up for the election began Dec. 17.The Board in place was appointed by the Pemiscot County Commission after all five sitting Board members resigned amid scandals of conflict of interests and the institution laid off employees and brought forth a financial crisis which threatened closure of the hospital and its ancillary services.
The five appointed members took right to the task of evaluating the situation and taking steps to returning the billing services from a former Board member’s business back to the hospital, securing a loan to pay back vendors, and working to rebuild and heal the image of the hospital in the community.
Generally only one Board member runs annually, and it is with the August elections. According to Pemiscot County Clerk Pam Treece, all five have to run in April because it is the next scheduled election. The appointments were only until the last election.
As of press time, no one had signed up yet for any of the seats but they have until Jan. 21, 2104. According to the Missouri Secretary of State, ballots must be certified by Jan. 28, 2014.
The terms are staggered, so the election will be held for a one, two, three, four and five year term. The current appointed Board members are Russell Gilmore, Timmy Gardner, Delila Swinger, Eddie Brooks, and Steve Reid.
