Nothing like the anticipation of a vacation. Doesn't matter when vacation is. Just nothing like getting ready to go. Now, even though its only February, and vacation season is still a couple of months away, there's no need to wait till the last minute to start getting ready.
First thing to do is decide where to go. Personally, Maine is a good choice. Certainly not a tank of gas drive but easily doable in a couple of days from East Tennessee. Six or seven hundred miles up I-81, hang a right at Scranton, hopscotch it through Hartford, go just west of Boston, hit I-95 and voila your there. Maine.
No trip to Maine would be complete without a stop in Freeport. Known for its shopping and most notably known as being the home of LL Bean. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No locks on the doors here. Shop anytime you want.
On up the coast a couple hours drive is the vacation town of Bar Harbor. Shops, restaurants, and bars make up the heart of downtown. In season whale watching boats leave twice a day for the North Atlantic. To the south is Acadia National Park. A must see for any trip to Maine. Camp, kayak, bike, hike, drive, or ride a bus. Acadia National Park has it all. Plan on at least half a day to drive the loop around the park.
A few good places to do business while in Maine. Of course LL Bean. A landmark of both Freeport and Maine. In Bar Harbor is The Chartroom restaurant. Lazy mans lobster dinner is to die for. On the west side of Mt. Desert Island is a place called Windward Cottages. Locally owned and comes complete with kayaks and canoes. Web sites are www.llbean.com, www.chartroombarharbor.com, and www.windwardcottages.com.
