No luck finding a job

Many people in the Bangor, Maine area have been out of work for a long time, looking to replace an old job or trying to find their first. It is a difficult task, with many people being turned down for jobs time and time again. This can be devastating to the ego, and can bring already depressed people and situations down even further.

Trying to put your best foot forward after each rejection is difficult, but here are some things to keep in mind when going for each new interview:

  • Remind yourself of the reasons why you would do good in the job while on the way to the interview. What are you good at? What are the assets that you can bring to the company?

  • Dress well. The Salvation Army and Goodwill both have clothes at reasonable prices that will help you to present a professional look at your next interview.

  • Shake hands with the interviewer and smile, introducing yourself. Keep a positive attitude during the interview. Ask questions about the company and the type of work involved in the job. Shake hands again at the end of the interview.

Things are not always the way they used to be, when our parents told us to call after the interview. Keep these tidbits in mind before, during and after the interview.

  • With the number of people residing in the Bangor area who are looking for work, not all potential employers have the time needed to field after-interview phone calls about how each persons application process is coming along. Ask the interviewer if it is okay to call and check on how things are progressing. Respect whatever response is given.

  • Realize that, more often than not, you will not even receive notice that your application was declined. Do not wait around to hear from anyone. Continue to look for work opportunities.

  • Some employers may not want to see tattoos or body piercings on their employers. Others may not care. Asking what to expect ahead of time will allow you to let the interviewer know that you respect the personal and professional desires of the employer.

  • Employers want to know that you have transportation to and from work. They want reliable employees who will show up on time. If you do not have the transportation, perhaps a job closer to your home is better.

  • Some employers will not hire someone who is under qualified for the job. It takes more resources to train them.

  • Others will not hire someone who is over qualified. This is because they feel the person may be offered a higher paying job by someone else, and therefore leave their company.

  • There have also been reports, not necessarily in Maine, that potential employees in some places prefer to hire someone who already has a job elsewhere. Hopefully this does not become common place, or their will be a lot of work placement issues.

It has been said that it can take a person up to a year of consistent job hunting to find a place that will hire them. Until you are able to find work, you will have to practice frugal living skills. While the tips below are just the beginning, they will help you to get started in living the frugal life.

  • Learn to cook frugal meals. Shop sales, and find out where the local food cupboards are in your area. The first time you visit each, find out how often and on what dates you can return. Do so. For the first visit, bring along financial information and social security numbers. Some places may also want proof of your address.

  • Find the best places to purchase dressy clothing on a budget, such as The Salvation Army. You will need at least one outfit and a nice pair of shoes for going on job interviews. Look for sales in other types of stores, and take advantage of clearance prices as well.

  • Carpool when possible to save money on gas. Or take the city bus which is far cheaper. Run all errands one day a week. Save gas whenever possible.

  • Cut back on utility use whenever possible and re-evaluate the cell phone and other bills.
