Excellent article Shawn. I agree that it would be premature to jump to conclusions about the image, and I'm also unconvinced by Google's explanation. As you point out, if it were a product of survey activity, why aren't there more such formations?
One other thing that struck me about this image is that discussion about it in the press has recognized Google as the authority. "Google claims..", "Google says...". Why is that? These are NASA images. How did Google manage to acquire the rank of subject matter expert? Granted, usually the SME is 'a government source' or simply 'experts'.
Finally, although I also agree that the real cause may indeed be a mundane one, I'm troubled by the willingness of the public not to demand or at least discuss a more believable, defendable explanation. I'm a skeptic, and I'm skeptical of the 'official' explanation. All too often people are only skeptical of those ideas or propositions that are unpopular, frightening, or disturbing.

I said, "I'm troubled by the willingness of the public not to demand or at least discuss a more believable, defendable explanation."
More accurately, I'm troubled by the unwillingness of the public to discuss and demand a better explanation.
Got something to say?
