Is Lando Calrission stuck in a galaxy far, far away? Legendary actor Billy Dee Williams, who played the iconic “Star Wars” character in the last two feature films for the franchise, doesn’t appear in a photo of the cast for the upcoming sequel, ”Star Wars Episode VII.”
On Wednesday, CNN posted a photo of a cast reading for JJ Abrams’ highly anticipated “Star Wars” sequel, and the 77-year old actor was nowhere to be seen.
In an interview with Blastr.com earlier this year, Williams was asked if he’d consider reprising his role of the Cloud City double crosser: “I haven't heard anything,” he said at the time. “No midnight calls yet.” But he added, “Sure, I'd be interested in playing Lando again, if it came my way. Sure.”
Williams recently paid tribute to his “Star Wars” days when he was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.” He bowed out of the celebrity ballroom competition in the third week, but not before doing a Lando-themed cha cha with pro partner Emma Slater. Williams also voiced the Lando Calrission character in the recent kiddie blockbuster “The Lego Movie.” Based on his promotion of the character, it seemed he was set to return to the role.
Speculation that Williams may have turned the part down appears to be false. The actor’s Twitter feed was filled with comments from angry fans on Wednesday morning, and he retweeted several comments that suggested the Lando character should return in the sequel.
While Williams’s “Star Wars” future is uncertain (we can always hope they’re just messing with us), stars that can be confirmed for the new JJ Abrams film include Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Leia Solo), Mark Ham ill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca). An announcement from Disney also revealed that new actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the cast of the “Star Wars” sequel.
“Star Wars Epsiode VII” will take place 30 years after “Return of the Jedi” ended. The movie is expected to be released on December 18, 2015.
