Honestly, when the QMI Agency presented their article about cat lovers wanting President Obama and his family to get a pet cat, they are failing to realize that some families cannot have felines because of allergy purposes. In fact that is the reason that the first family decided on the Portuguese Water Dog breed – a breed that carries no allergens.
It is understandable that cat enthusiasts like to see that a feline is as important of a figurehead as a dog seems to be, but they do have to realize that many people have horrendous allergies to the fur and dander that Fluffy emits. Many of us love cats but cannot make our health work with them present. It is simply not an excuse!
The last cat in office was India who belonged to President George W. Bush and First Lady, Barbara Bush. India passed over the Rainbow Bridge just two weeks before President Obama was inaugurated.
Many times, families like the Obamas would be happy to get a kitty to love, but severe allergies such as the ones that Malia, their daughter, has is enough for them to keep away from issues that a cat could produce. In fact, the White House may have had to have a special cleaning crew to rid it of the cat dander that India left behind so that Malia’s allergies would not go into hyper drive.
We cat lovers have to be grateful for all of the other public figures that know and realize that cat love is good love, too, and are able to have a cat as a first pet. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is one of many political figures that promotes cat adoption and is photographed with his cat Stanley; one of his two adopted felines. Kitties are particular though, so his other cat Gypsy refuses the public displays that Prime Minister Harper would like to display.
Of course Mayor Stubbs is actually a cat figurehead in Talkeetna, Alaska that has served for the past 15 years and Morris was running in the Mayoral election in Mexico this past July. These are actual cats serving in actual offices. We should all be appreciative to have what we can.
The worst thing one animal lover can do to another is force the issue of adoption of one type of animal or another for any purpose. This could potentially lead to abuse, neglect, or abandonment of the pet. Each family has to know what is right for them and this is certainly not a dis to the other animals out there. Let’s just all try to be glad that the Obama family is accepting of pets in the first place and leave it to them to decide what pet is best for their situation. Okay?
