“There will be no Fifth Amendment Theater tomorrow of the Phoenix US Attorneys being forced to say their ‘I-don't-wannas’ in front of the cameras,” Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars files in an exclusive report today from Washington, DC.
There will be only one panel of one -- Eric Holder. This is viewed by many who have been following the investigation as a serious mistake. Said one, "More simple browbeating of Eric Eric Holder without dramatic new evidence to impeach his story is going to look petty, mean and impotent.
Perhaps. After all, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa has pledged “We are still going to bring him forward” in response to Chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona Patrick Cunningham’s decision to invoke his right not to self-incriminate after being subpoenaed to testify. And Issa has further demanded Justice stop blocking testimony from Cunningham underling Michael Morrissey.
Compound this with a return shot from Committee Democrats attempting to absolve their administration allies, an outraged response from Sen. Chuck Grassley of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and yesterday’s stunning, knives-are-out ultimatum by Issa to charge stonewalling Attorney General Eric Holder with contempt of Congress, and it would appear an opportunity to show the American people an ongoing cover-up happening before their eyes may be lost.
And perhaps not. Again, per Vanderboegh:
Insider defenders of this strategy all point to the fact that this this will not be a grilling in front of another committees such as the previous Judiciary hearing, but of Issa's own committee. Said one confidently, "Issa won't let him off the hook." But this begs the question, how big of a hook does the Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform have in his tackle box and is the GOP leadership willing to let him use it?
Tomorrow will tell, and those interested in truth and real accountability can only hope Issa is as serious as his latest letter makes him appear. So far, he's built a meticulous case--when the stakes are high, the approach must be methodical, and we outside observers simply don't know what he does. Fortunately, neither do the apologists for government criminality putting out all the flak to stop him.
In the mean time, The GunMag.com Senior Editor Dave Workman reminds us of another opportunity where there is no doubt of it being squandered: Republican presidential contenders avoiding Gunwalker altogether. After all, he observes:
If Fast and Furious had happened under a Republican president, and a Republican attorney general, this story would be front page news, above the fold, in every major American newspaper, every day and most assuredly on Sunday, until that president was driven from office, and you know it.
Undoubtedly.

Note to newcomers to this story: “Project Gunrunner” is the name ATF assigned to its Southwest Border Initiative to interdict gun smuggling to Mexico. “Project Gunwalker” is the name I assigned to the scandal after allegations by agents that monitored guns were allowed to fall into criminal hands on both sides of the border through a surveillance process termed “walking” surfaced.
