No championships needed for Cotto or Pacquiao.

This should not be on the line between Cotto and Pacquiao

Styles make fights and memorable boxing moments, championships upon themselves do not; I firmly stand by that belief.

When Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao dance the brutal tango of boxing November 14, the world will be watching two of the sport's best due to their heart and fan-friendly action-based styles of boxing.

You will not see any hugging, or holding, and there will be plenty of fiery exchanges between the Puerto Rican and the Filipino.  If either man gets hurt in the process, they will go down on their shield.

Those statements, in and of themselves, are why November 14 will be a great day for boxing.  Anything else that heightens the marketing of the battle is just extra.

Houston's Boxing Examiner Marv Dumon stated in his recent column that this is an opportunity for Pacquiao to capture a world championship in a 7th division.  While I enjoy Mr. Dumon's coverage of boxing from the goggles of a Southeast Texan, I must ask, what championship are Cotto and Pacquiao battling for in November?

Cotto holds the World Boxing Organization's welterweight crown and Manny Pacquiao is The Ring Magazine and IBO's junior welterweight champion.  Cotto and Pacquiao will meet at a weight limit of 145 pounds; the welterweight limit is 147 pounds and the junior welter's 140.  Clearly this battle takes place somewhere in between the two.

Common logic would state, no title will be on the line here.

I contacted Mr. Paco Valcarcel of the WBO today to ask is the WBO belt would be on the line, but he was not available for comment.  Who know maybe the sanctioning body id willing to lower their welterweight limit to cash in on a sanctioning fee during these hard economic times.

So while I cannot see how a sanctioned championship would be on the line, it does not matter.  The warrior-like characteristics of Pacquiao and Cotto will make for a memorable and historic night.

140 is the MAX limit for Light-Welter and 147 is the MAX limtit for Welter. So anything between 140.1 and 147 is fair game for the Welterweight Title. This is a welterweight championship bought. Cotto just agreed contractually to be at 145 to get the fight signed.

Either way, Pacnan nor Cotto cares about Championships right now. Whoever wins this fight will get another BIG payday and a huge target on their Chest.

  • Huskyboy 2 years ago

FB is correct that welterweight is from 140.1 - 147. But he is wrong that Pacquiao does not care for the belt... I think he does care and if the title is on the line and pacquiao wins. He will be the only boxer to win 7 world titles in seven different weight division. Oscar only did 6. This is legendary... pacquiao is a living legend... the greatest.. I hope the title is on the line here...

    Ricardo Lois,
I am surprised you are a boxing writer and YET you have no idea about weight limits for Championship fights. As what FB stated above, Welterweight limit has a MAXIMUM of 147 lbs and JR. WELTERWEIGHT HAS 140 lbs as the ceiling. So, in essence, Welterweight starts at 140.1 or 141 lbs UP TO 147 lbs. I am very surprised at your boxing understanding my friend!

  • davepinoy 2 years ago

This writer need to learn a lot from boxing...He simply doesnt understand what a maximum limit is and is simply an ignoramus...How can such misinformed and uninitiated person be a sportswriter..examiner.com's reputation is definitely tainted with this piece of junk.....They should fire this guy....

  • ANON 2 years ago

How long has this writer been writing about boxing? Geeezzzz. He doesn't know the definition of welterweight. LOL! Fire this guy!

  • Rican 2 years ago

LOL @ Ricardo. Are you really a boxing writer? How come you didn't know the Welterweight division limits and weight range? This is the dumbest article i have read from you Ricardo. LOL! I think you should quit. Or Maybe you just wanted Website hits? Arent you?

  • Blacksocks 2 years ago

Boxing history has many title fights with agreed weight limits in between weight divisions. The limits are agreed upon by fighters fighting on different divisions in order to make a fight possible without one having a big advantage.

Pacquiao vs Dela Hoya was a welterweight fight even though Pac officially weighed 142 and Oscar at 145.

  • pahak 2 years ago

thenational.ae posted that its a non-title bout also the lvreviewjournal.com did release also a post that it is not a title bout..but then the chairman of the WBO body did not comment on this, so which is which then? there was a move that pacman will be made the #1 challenger in the WBO welterweight class, it must be a title fight to make it more thrilling man..

  • pacmanisnumberone 2 years ago

the writer said the limit for the welterweight is 147 and the fight is in 145.. so whats the problem with that? this is a welterweight bout.. mr. lois r u really a sports writer?

    141 - 147... the welterweight range...

if the fight is going to be 145, it doesn't matter because it is still in the welterweight range... 147 is the limit...

man, until now they argue about this.... pls understand!

  • tagor61 2 years ago

hey Ricardo, did you know that 145 is still a welterweight? 147 is just the limit, so it will be a welterweight fight even though the agreed limit is 145! i'm starting to think that you don't really know about boxing! you are only pretending to be a boxing writer! harharhar!

  • nasty 2 years ago

ricardo lois: how come you dont know the weight limit of jr welterweight(136 lbs to 140 lbs) and welterweight(141 lbs to 147 lbs)? are you a boxing writer or what?. this fighters wants their wbo crown this is a championship bout than mayweather to tell you lois!

  • pahak 2 years ago

master, we all understand that welter is from 141-147, i said it before and i'll say it again, that is why they will strap u naked of that gold belt when you are a pound heavier in a jr. welter bout.. the question would be, whether or not the WBO will sanction this fight as a title fight...only the chairman of the WBO can answer that...lets just wait.. i hope it is, so pac can make history which no one has ever been...7th 7th it is..peace

  • no! 2 years ago

remember lois. when manny fighting ricky at jr welterweight. ricky hatton weighs 140 lbs while manny pacquiao weighs 138.5 lbs... its still the range of jr welterweight, IBO and linear belt was on the line.. now tell us 141 lbs to 147 lbs is not welterweight?

  • Nhuts 2 years ago

I know your a respected writer but please can you enlighten us on the word "LIMIT". I thought when you use that word it means from something to a MAX. So 141 something to 147 MAX right..?

I'm not a writer but I do understand that word.

  • killmenow 2 years ago

it doesnt matter now to pacquaio, by the way he doesnt knw that we are talking about weight issues. he's not even bothered! if you don't want to watch pacquaio fighting then it's ok. everybody has their own opinions and thinking. this article makes them great anyway so just keep writing than not writing at all. peace!

  • Israel 2 years ago

140+lbs up to 147lbs is the welterweight range. Cotto's WBO welter belt will be on the line.

  • Reynald 2 years ago

In the real sense even Cotto is WBO Welterweight champion but he is a challenger because Pacman is P4P champion.

  • jeripiper 2 years ago

no belt on the line? i thought that you are a boxing scribe? you should know more... the welterweight is in the 140+ to 147 range..any weight with in that is still welter..

  • Taliban_Freak 2 years ago

Even if the WBO will not sanction it to be a championship fight, Pacquaio winning will still be recognized as 7th win for him in 7 different weight division. The dopey writer is just defensive in Cotto's belt if ever he loss the fight.

  • Fidel 2 years ago

Ricardo Lois you don't know anything about boxing. Better find a new line of work.

  • ferdskhan 2 years ago

if the welterweight limit is 147, & the jr. welterweight limit is only 140..then if the fight is on 145, Common LOGIC said its a Welterweight Championship.

  • PAC-COTTO WAR 2 years ago

Leave the author alone....he just wants to sound fair and at the same time try say that this shouldn't be for a welterweight belt....funny thing is...the author is a "legit" boxing examiner...but he seems to be ignorant about catchweights with legit belts on the line.

  • protest 2 years ago

com'on mr lois. you only posted a column with pacquio on the title, so that people will read your writing. you very well know that pacquiao is the most searched item in boxing today. so you only join the ride on pacman caravan.
it only damage your reputation as a commentator if you guys keeps on making bad comments / analysis of what may happen or what is the real score. for your purpose is to make brag that your colum is the most read where in fact your reputation as a writer is tainted because of false logic.

  • jeripiper 2 years ago

Boxing examiner? Common logic would state, no title will be on the line here. you are being illogical lois

  • baby pacquiao 2 years ago

Tama si Ricardo, mga bobo talaga kayong lahat, The logic is correct, why? Because manny pacquiao and pacquiao team, demanding a weight limit of 145lbs, So meaning to say, The weight limit of welterweight division which is 147lbs is not applicable in this situation. Because Cotto is struggling to come down to 145lbs, which is not his division, did u get the point? Soo meaning this is not a Welterweight fight, because of the world limit. If pacquiao team did not demanded a weight limit for cotto, soo in should be a welterweight fight... bsan unsaon, bugo jud ning mga pinoy.. pataka ra ug yawit, dili basahon ug sabton ang message ni ricardo. legit boxing examiner? he is illegitimate.he doesnt even know boxing weight ranges....

  • Taliban_Freak 2 years ago

My hunch WBO will sanction the fight if they know how to perceive monetary value they can collect from this super colossal fracas.

  • MANG RESTY 2 years ago

ricardo lois knows the limit of boxings weight division, it is only that ricardo lois is oozing with hatred for the pacman that is why he wants to deprive manny of the shot to history. people have you forgotten the thing about his "chicken dance" prediction? stop riding on pacmans caravan in order to gather "hits" shame on you user/motherflyer you!!!

  • rhey 2 years ago

i thought it is a championship fight cause paquiao is aiming for another the title..

  • pacnut 2 years ago

ricky, i'm not sure where's your logic is (but i can sell you one here in my office, if you want one!), listen here, they are fighting at 145lbs which is within the welterweight limit, so should WBO sanctioned that fight, it should be a championship fight! Now if you're questioning why 145 and not 147, that's the result of NEGOTIATION!! since cotto won't fight at 143 and pacquiao won't fight at 147 so there it is, at 145, intiendes!? By agreeing to fight, both boxers already won, why?, Pacquiao get the chance to win his 7th world title and earn possibly the biggest paycheck of his career notwithstanding a fight with pretty gay (nice rhyme, right?) floyd next year and cotto, to earn his biggest paycheck and possibly his way to more superfights, and not all that, his chance to defeat the pound for pound king! You can also call yourself a winner, since you can write something, bad or good, about the fight and about pacquiao and assure yourself of at least a million pinoy readers worldwide

  • rogelio 2 years ago

mr author i strongly disagree with you because of the meaning of the word "limit" itself is self explanatory. it's is real common logic the welter limit is 147lbs meaning that is the boundary. this fight is over 140lbs the junior welter which pacquiao holds and any pound over that is no longer the domain of the junior welter division. meaning that is "within" the teritory of the welterweight division. please be reminded that weight limit is imposed so that there will be equal chances for the protagonists. this is for all weight divisions. flyweight is between 108 and 112 if you weigh above 112 you are no longer aflyweight so that makes you a super flyweight. i hope you are enlightened with this. thank you!

  • jovilito1974 2 years ago

Hey Ricardo there you go again.. check again you facts. when cotto fought clottey he weights 146, but still they fought for the WBO welter belt. for your information, other writers say that welterweight is from 141 to 147....

  • joel 2 years ago

I also doubt if this writer really knows about boxing, it's basic for a boxing writer to know that 145 is a welter fight, the limit is 147. Anything within 141 to 147 is a legit welter fight. peace!

  • boxfan 2 years ago

Ricardo, you have a poor logic...

  • cuchillo 2 years ago

LOL, shows what a dumb writer you are Lois, with your logic 145 is not a welterweight. It is clear that welters are those with weights that range from 141-147, dont get confused man! LOL also with your logic, oscar (145) and manny (142) is not a legit welterweight fight when they fought last december LOL

  • jovilito1974 2 years ago

to the examiner board: i am a big fan of this site for boxing news and articles. never in your history has a reporter appeared and sounded so incompetent and misinformed. he deserves to be fired!

  • jeripiper 2 years ago

any fight with in 140+ to 147 is a welterweight fight...(Soo meaning this is not a Welterweight fight, because of the world limit.) what's a world limit?

  • WBO 2 years ago

To make things clear for all, google search for 'wbo weight limits'. For those who do not know how to search on the web, the following phrases are extract from the WBO Boxing Weight Classes list:
    10. Super Lightweight (ABC, WBA, WBC) Junior Welterweight (IBF, WBO) Light Welterweight (IBO)
Over 135 lbs or 61.235 kgs to 140 lbs or 63.503 kgs
    11. WELTERWEIGHT (ABC, IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBO)
Over 140 lbs or 63.503 kgs to 147 lbs or 66.678 kgs
    12. Super Welterweight (ABC, WBA, WBC) Junior Middleweight (IBF, WBO) Light Middleweight (IBO)
Over 147 lbs or 66.678 kgs to 154 lbs or 69.853 kgs
Therefore, 147 lbs is the upper (max) limit for welterweight class and 145 lbs is in the welterweight range.
PLEASE for Ricardo Lois (author of this article) and those wrongs who called other commentators as ignorant, do search for the facts before you write or say anything as your credibility is well at stake.

  • Justpassingby 2 years ago

Sorry to say but this nitpicking on the weight issue is stupid. 147 is the UPPER LIMIT. You can go lower but not higher otherwise Cotto will not be welterwieght champion by coming in at 146. Most people got tunnel vision nowadays.
