It's a perennial problem: On the one hand, you have art lovers who can't afford all the art they love. On the other, you have artists who've got a houseful of art—they just can't afford orthodontia for the kids, say, or the occasional night out.
But starting tonight and continuing for a week, Chester County art lovers and artists will all have a chance to get what they want and need through the Chester County Art Association (CCAA)'s Art4Barter exhibition.
The Art4Barter concept allows artists to offer their work not for money, but for goods and services they need. This lets art lovers who don't have enough ready cash swap their professional products or services or goods in exchange for the works of art they want.
The Art4Barter exhibition takes place at the CCAA building at 100 North Bradford Avenue, West Chester, with an opening reception Friday, June 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. Curated by local artist Antonio Puri, the show offers a wide variety of works by outstanding area artists that can be taken home in exchange for a wide variety of things the artists need.
Some of those needs are prosaic: a hollow-core door, for example. Another artist wants a gift certificate to a favorite brew pub so he can raise a glass with his wife more often; yet another wants a romantic weekend getaway. And one artist wants 40 pounds of cosmetic grade beeswax, because her medium is encaustic painting.
If you're low on beeswax, no worries; another artist simply wants two day's worth of help getting the studio painted. And if that doesn't work for you, CCAA Development Director Paul Andreas says alternative ideas are certainly welcome.
Art4Barter runs through June 19. The exhibition is open to the public at no charge at the CCAA headquarters at 100 N. Bradford Avenue in West Chester. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Members' Open Exhibition, featuring work by CCAA members, is also on view in the CCAA building's large gallery through June 19.
