The Quinnipiac Bobcats, ranked No. 5 in both major national polls, skated to a 1-1 tie with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey match-up before 2,910 fans at the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden on Friday night.
All the scoring occurred in the second period. RPI jumped out to a 1-0 lead three minutes into the middle frame when C.J. Lee picked up his third goal of the season—a power play goal that he put past Bobcat goalie Eric Hartzell off a rebound from a blast from the high slot by Milos Bubela. The Bobcats answered midway through the period when Zach Tolkinen fed Matthew Peca in front of the crease. Peca, a native of Petawawa, Ont., found senior forward Jeremy Langlois in front of the Engineers’ goal, who promptly one-timed it over the shoulder of RPI netminder Bryce Merriam to knot the score at 1-1 at the 9:59 mark. It was Langlois’s team-leading 11th marker of the season, and the 54th career goal for the 6-0, 173-lb. senior from Tempe, Ariz.
Hartzell, who hails from White Bear Lake, Minn., stopped 24 of 25 shots taken by the Engineers, while Merriam was 26-for-27 between the pipes for RPI.
The Bobcats are now off until Sat., Jan. 12, when they host No. 16 Union at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. First puck drops at 7 p.m.
