No. 4 Michigan upset: Michigan Wolverines upset by Penn State in Big Ten play

The No. 4 Michigan Wolverines got upset by Penn State on Wednesday (Feb. 27). This Michigan upset came at a terrible time for the Wolverines, as the team had a good chance at moving up in the polls again this week. Instead, Penn State beat them 84-78 to achieve the first Big Ten conference win for the Nittany Lions this season.

This loss for Michigan came on the defensive end of the court, as Penn State hit on 50 percent from three-point range and only turned the ball over nine times. The Nittany Lions also had 20 free throws and finished with one of their highest scoring games of the season.

With this loss, Michigan falls to 23-5 on the season and the team still has a very tough game against the Michigan State Spartans coming up on Sunday (March 3). After jumping up to No. 4 in both the Week 17 AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll, the Wolverines had a great shot to move up again after Indiana got upset earlier in the week.

Indiana Upset By Minnesota

The reality is that Miami, Kansas, and Georgetown could all pass the Wolverines when the Week 18 college basketball rankings come out. It's also possible that a loss to the Spartans on Sunday could allow their arch rival a shot to move past them in the polls. With the season winding down, upsets become even more pronounced in the standings and Michigan just should not have lost to a team that now has only nine wins on the season.
