UAB began the game with smothering defense againt the tallest team in the conference. They gave up only 22 points to the Golden Hurricane and even caused 7-footer Jerome Jordan to airball a lay-up. All seemed well as they took a 38 to 22 lead into halftime.
As with most games by UAB as of late, they just had to let it get too close for comfort. For about the first 12 minutes of the second half UAB only scored 4 points, and with 6:30 left to play Tulsa went ahead 46-44.
UAB didn't give up, though. After the teams traded foul shots back and forth, UAB was finally able to pull back ahead 52-48 off a monster one-handed jam by Elijah Millsap and his ensuing free throw.
The Blazers did not trail again and managed to actually hit some real shots from the field for the rest of the half. UAB finished the evening hitting 20 of 48 field goals. They shot terribly from beyond the arc, making only 2 of 14. Free throws made the difference for UAB as they hit 19 in the second half alone and 23 for the entire game. Leading UAB in scoring was Millsap with 19 points followed by George Drake with 17.
Tulsa managed to hit just 18 of 47 shots for the game, and had 3 of 10 from 3-point range. They had 16 free throws. The Golden Hurricane also out-rebounded UAB 35 to 27. Tulsa was lead in scoring by Jerome Jordan who ended the game with 20 points, followed y Ben Uzoh who had 17.
With the win, No. 25 UAB moves to 18-2 overall and 6-0 in C-USA play. Tulsa falls to 16-4 and 5-1 in conference play. UAB is now the only unbeaten team in C-USA play.
