No. 1 deadbeat parent: Dad owes over $1 million to children, pleads guilty

The nicknamed no. 1 deadbeat parent has pleaded guilty this week as the U.S. government’s “worst” parent, WREG News reported this Friday, Feb. 22. The dad reportedly owes more than $1.2 million to his three children from two past failed marriages.

Robert Sand pleaded guilty this week in a U.S. court as the “no. 1 deadbeat parent” on two counts of failure to pay child support. The expensive money figure now includes several penalties and interest in addition to the original child support fees, which began since 2002.

“Neither court orders nor the familial bond meant anything to him as he fled to avoid his obligations,” said U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch in a statement.

Sand reportedly confessed to the judge that he hid in FL before going to Thailand, working several odd jobs to pay his own bills. His attorney then stated that Sand had enough of living on the run, and finally turned himself in late in 2012.

Robert Sand flew off to the Philippines, where he was arrested for lack of identification, before being deported to Los Angeles and finally sent to New York.

“He had enough and wanted to come back and have the opportunity to make it right,” his attorney added.

The no. 1 deadbeat parent now faces nearly four years in prison if convicted of all charges during his sentencing this May.
