For the second year in a row, One Direction has been named Worst Band by the NME Awards, which are voted on by NME readers. Meanwhile, One Direction's Harry Styles was named Villain of the Year at the 2013 NME Awards ceremony, which was held Feb. 27 at The Troxy in London.
One Direction did not attend the ceremony. The group was performing a concert in Glasgow, Scotland. And even if the One Direction had been available to attend the NME Awards, it's highly unlikely that One Direction would be there. One Direction had the dubious honor of winning the Worst Band prize at the NME Awards in 2012. The group obviously did not attend the ceremony then either.
NME is a magazine that primarily covers rock music. Many pop artists are looked down on by NME writers and readers, who consider a lot of pop music to be not good enough for their tastes.
As previously reported, the other Worst Band nominees for the 2013 NME Awards were Muse, Mumford & Sons, Alt-J, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran. (Bieber and Sheeran are solo artists, so it doesn't make sense that they were in the Worst Band category.)
The other Villain of the Year nominees for the 2013 NME Awards were David Cameron, Skrillex, Psy, Fred Macpherson and Azealia Banks.
A complete list of winners can be found at the NME website.
While NME Awards may have a lot of disdain for One Direction, the group has been honored at the Brit Awards (a more important awards show): In 2012, One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" won the Brit Award for Best British Single. In 2013, One Direction won the Brit Award for Best Brits Global Success.
One Direction, which was came in third place "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010, has won many prizes at other awards shows, including the 2013 People's Choice Awards, 2013 NRJ Music Awards, 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, 2012 Teen Choice Awards, 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards, 2012 Bambi Awards and 2012 ARIA Awards.
