"Man, that's un-American..."
The town of West New York, N.J. is proposing an ordinance that would outlaw not only most outdoor signs, but also all "flags, banners and pennants" to include the Stars and Stripes, as reported by MyFoxNY.com on Jan. 18, 2013.
Of the nineteen examples of the ordinance listed as being prohibited, specification F clearly states among the illegal accoutrements:
"Flags, banners and pennants."
The town's Board of Commissioners have stated the proposed ordinance would be "beneficial to the public welfare."
Now that all flags would be classified as signs, the proposed ordinance defines American flags, even those on private property, as illegal unless a sign permit was issued by the West New York official sign beauracracy.
As outraged West New Yorker Frank Ferriero stated:
"What if I want to hang the American Flag? I can't.
Man, that's un-American."
The ordinance is still pending passage until a public hearing to be held on February 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the town's Municipal Building.
If passed, the ordinance would deem illegal flying the American flag, such as one at the 9/11 memorial To the Struggle Against World Terrorism located in near-by Bayonne, N.J.
