The NJ mall shooting ends with the suicide of the gunman, Richard Shoop. The 20-year-old restaurant worker, entered a NJ mall on Monday firing off rounds and terrifying shoppers and mall workers, according to “Fox First” live on Tuesday morning Nov. 5.
CNN reports this morning that Shoop shot at security cameras while making his way through the mall with a rifle. No one was hurt in the shooting that kept the Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall on lockdown into the early hours of the morning on Tuesday.
Prosecutor John Molinelli told the media that law enforcement was acquainted with Shoop who had a history of drug use and abuse. Police believe that Shoop’s motive was suicide by cop when he set out on this NJ mall shooting.
Shoop had ample time and opportunity to shoot many people, but he did not take aim at a single person. Police said they believe that the gunman’s only purpose for entering one of busiest malls in the country with a gun was suicide. He most likely wanted to be shot by police, but when that didn't happen he ended his own life.
Shoop entered the mall a little before closing time at about 9:20 p.m. on Monday night carrying a rifle. As Shoop was spotted walking with this gun it started a frenzy. This started mall customers running for the nearest exit.
When the gunman shot five shots in the air and took out a security camera the sound of gunfire started chaos in this 2-million square foot building. Some people stayed lockdown inside of the stores in the mall until after the gunman’s body was discovered as others made it out of the mall when the gunshots first rang out.
Shoop’s body was discovered at 3:20 a.m. this morning in an area in the back of the mall where construction was underway. He had shot himself, according to the local prosecutor.
Witness said it was like watching a movie with people in a frenzy running to get out of the mall as a man dressed in black carrying a rifle was spotted walking through the mall. Shoop’s body is still inside the mall this morning as the investigation is still on-going.
