NJ Garbage Bag Dog Samurai in Guarded Condition (Photos)

It made national news when a couple turned in a dog they said was found in a garbage bag at the side of a road in Brick, New Jersey. The Associated Humane Society took in the dog sending him out for emergency treatment when they discovered the extent of his injuries. The couple was hailed for “doing the right thing,” and the dog was named Morgan after the people that brought the dog in for help. It was soon discovered however that the couple were the ones who actually put this poor Cocker Spaniel in the horrifying condition he was in and Morgan’s name was promptly changed to Samurai or Sammy for short.

Keith Morgan and his wife Shauna Ewing Morgan were taken into custody at their Brick New Jersey home on Friday for numerous animal cruelty charges; however they have since been released. They face multiple counts including animal cruelty involving neglect and abandonment which carry up to 6-months of jail time, as well as charges for filing a false report. If Samurai the Cocker Spaniel dies then the charge would be an indictable offense.

Samurai is being taken care of at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, in Tilton Falls, NJ. He was severely dehydrated, emaciated, had a fever, skin infections, and was covered in his own waste. He had urine burns to his skin and paw pads. He was matted from waste, filth and being neglected so severely that he was unable to move. The matted hair completely covered the dog so that he could no longer get up or move.

Per the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital website: Red Bank Veterinary Hospital is not charging for any of Sammy’s care while he is with us. However, due to community requests, we have set up a fund to go toward Sammy’s future needs. Should you wish to contribute; checks can be sent to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, 197 Hance Avenue, Tinton Falls, NJ 07724. Be sure to note that your donation is for the Morgan/Samurai Fund.
