The new Nixs Brewpub on South Water St is a great find for all ages, with moderate prices and terrific food. Located in the place of the old Seadog Brewpub, Nixs has a more imaginative menu and much better food and service. Nixs came into being after a partnership split from the old Seadog partners and is now cut free of the constraints of the old Seadog menu and is now managed by island expert Jimmy Agnew. It appears that Nix was a local pirate in the 1600s.
The menu includes around a dozen brews on tap and slightly unexpected items like Hush Puppies, Lobster Knuckle Sliders and Short Rib Tacos, in addition to more conventional fare.
We started with their “Clam Chowdah,” a creamy New England style chowder with bacon and chives ($7 and $9) and Beer Mussels ($16), a huge platter of mussels steamed in Cisco beet with bacon lardons and shallots, and served with garlic bread to sop up the delicious broth. Both were exceptionally well prepared and delivered in just minutes.
While there are lots of things we’d like to try eventually, we had to see how their hamburger stacks up to the competition, and are pleased to say that it is one of the island’s best: warm, juicy, medium rare, and served with a bundle actual fresh French fries. This was the Nixs Burger ($13): they also offer The Gallop Cheeseburger ($14) with Vermont Cheddar and a special sauce. Both are served on a toasted brioche roll. They also offer a smaller Late Night After 10 Burger.
Our other entrée was a delicious Best Lobster Roll Around ($22), and while we didn’t actually see it “roll around,” we did find it tender, meaty and delicious, and a more than adequate dinner portion served on a grilled buttery roll.
But wait! Don’t go yet! You have to try their Zeppole ($10) for dessert: cinnamon dusted ricotta fritters with caramel and vanilla custard for dipping. These are basically delicious, hot, freshly made Italian doughnuts, and you really have to try them to believe how good they are.
Look for local bands performing a Nixs most weekends. Friday night we heard a great country band.
Nixs Brewpub is a welcome addition to the family dining and nightlife of Nantucket and we give it top marks all around!
