Hey, New Yorkers, want to see what the "Taxi of Tomorrow" will look like when those ubiquitous Ford Crown Victorias disappear from the city streets?
You will get your chance at the Nissan Taxi of Tomorrow Design Expo Nov. 1 through Nov. 5 on the pedestrian plaza across from the Flatiron Building at Broadway and 5th Avenue.
The interactive display will offer a peek at the vehicle's planned interior, which was distilled from ideas supplied by taxi owners, drivers, passengers and other New York City residents.
The amenities, according to Joe Castelli, vice president of Nissan Fleet and Commercial Vehicles, will include increased leg room and interior lighting, plus materials that reduce germs and odors.
The Taxi of Tomorrow program began in 2007 when city officials solicited ideas and created goals for a new cab. In 2011, the Nissan NV200 was selected from among design competitors to produce the cab, which should hit the streets in 2013 and be the official New York taxi for 10 years.
Taxi of Tomorrow was the result of an effort by the Design Trust for Public Space and the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission to re-imagine the entire taxi system.
Also participating in the NV200's development were Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.
The Design Expo will be open to the public on Nov. 1 from noon to 9 p.m., Nov. 2 through Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Nov. 5 from 8 a.m to 6 p.m.
