Nissan lowers price of home charging station for all-electric 2012 Nissan Leaf

Nissan has lowered the price of the home charging system for the plug-in 2012 Nissan Leaf electric car to make it more affordable and accessible to potential EV owners and drivers.

The home charging system, developed by AeroVironment, Nissan’s official supplier, can be purchased along with a Leaf Nissan dealers.  The new $1,818 cost for a typical home installation price includes both hardware and installation services.  This is about half the previous cost.

The 2012 Nissan Leaf is the first and only all-electric, zero-emission vehicle available to the mass market.  The other mass market plug-in already on the market is the 2012 Chevrolet Volt, which is an extended-range hybrid, with a gas engine to back up and extend the battery-powered mileage.  Toyota is introducing a plug-in Prius for the 2012 model year.

Although the packaged price has been reduced, the Nissan-approved charging system remains the same.  It features a UL-listed charging dock, on-site consultation, charging dock installation, hands-on user training, 3-year hardware and service warranty and 24/7, single point-of-contact availability.

On standard 110 volt household current, it takes six to ten hours to fully charge an EV car.  On heavy duty 220v, that time is cut in half.

"By reducing the standard price for the installation of the Nissan LEAF home charging system, we aim to make the system accessible to a wider range of consumers," said Brendan Jones, director of Nissan Leaf marketing and sales strategy America. It’s also one-stop shopping for consumers able to purchase the car and the charging unit in the same place at the same time.
