When it comes to drifting, you can either do it on a track or on the streets. The world of illegal street drifting is not as popular as illegal street racing, but most can agree it's much more difficult. The variables encountered during an illegal street drifting event are more difficult to adjust for on the fly; especially when random cars pop out of nowhere. The bad part is that the drifters have minimal control over the vehicles after they set an initial drift trajectory. There is still plenty of steer and brake left to use, but it's obviously not as effective as if the car was traveling normally instead of sideways.
Even though illegal drifting is taboo, many cars today are ideal for illegal street drifting. The following video shows what appears to be a stock Nissan 350z destroying several local roads. The Nissan 350z is ideal for drifting with it's well balanced chassis and high rev power based engine. Coupled with a manual transmission and stiff suspension, the 350z is almost a full blown drift car straight from the factory. Other vehicles that come prepared for drifting would be the Hyundai Genesis, Nissan Skyline, Toyota Supra, Lexus IS300, BMW 3 series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Subaru Impreza, and the Nissan Sylvia series.
More exciting Nissan footage!
Many other vehicles can be used for drift but simply are not light nor nimble enough to effectively drift. Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and other V8 rear wheel drive vehicles have plenty of power to spin the tires, but lack the balance required for extensive drift competition. Ideally, a drift car should have a lightweight engine that creates plenty of smooth power on the dyno and be balanced with the chassis at the same time. Is the Nissan 350z balanced? cool vid but before you go knockin' the domestics for your foreign car think about where drifting started. we did it here in the us before japan ever even thought about it, we just never called it anything but... "fun." cool, japan has a really awesome sport founded, but america is where it started.
