Sixteen nominees are in the field this year for the Rock Hall Class of 2014, and its quite a diverse cast of bands and solo artists spanning the realm from Blues to Classic and Progressive Rock, R&B, Rap and Post Punk.
To be eligible, an artist must have released their first record at least 25 years ago. This year Nirvana is the only artist to be nominated in their first year of eligibility. In 2012, Guns -N- Roses were nominated and inducted in their first year of eligibility followed by Public Enemy in 2013.
Below is the list of nominees released this morning by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in alphabetical order). The public can vote online for your favorite. The results will likely be announced before the end of the year. Last year, eight artists were inducted.
Paul Butterfield Blues Band 2nd year in a row being nominated and third overall. Eligible since 1988. Headlining blues band of the 60's that had bands like Jefferson Airplane, Cream and others open for them.
Chic This nomination ties The Stooges for most years nominated (8) without entering the Rock Hall. Disco pioneers that influenced many hip hop and rap groups.
Deep Purple This is the second nomination in a row for the Classic Rock legends after being eligible since 1993.
Peter Gabriel First time nomination. Eligible since 2002. Gabriel is already in the Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis. His solo work which includes the world-wide top selling album "So" from 1986 has lasted much longer.
Hall & Oates First time nomination. Eligible since 1997. Top selling duo of all-time. Legendary pop & soul hit makers.
Kiss Second time nominee. Last time was 2008. Eligible since 1999. One of those legendary bands that has had an unbelievable career with legions of fans despite the lack of critical acclaim or industry awards.
LL Cool J Nominated for the third time in five years. Eligible since 2009. Major contributor to rap and hip-hop.
The Meters As with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, this is their second year in a row being nominated and third overall. Eligible since 1994. Funk/R&B legends that included two of the Neville brothers.
Nirvana Nominated in their first year of eligibility. Pioneers of the "grunge-rock" movement.
N.W.A. Second straight nomination in as many years of eligibility for these rap and hip hop legends.
The Replacements First time nominees. Eligible since 2006. Post punk, straight up guitar rock. Influenced Green Day and many others.
Linda Ronstadt First time nominee. Eligible since 1994. One of the first female pop/rock voices of the 1970's. Known mostly for her re-make hits of Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers and others. Performed with the early incarnation of The Eagles.
Cat Stevens Exquisite songwriter and hit maker of the 1970's. Stevens was nominated before in 2006. Eligible since 1991.
Link Wray First time nominee. Eligible since 1983. Pete Townshend's "biggest influence". A pioneer of power chords and guitar effects.
Yes First time nomination for the Progressive Rock pioneers. Eligible since 1994.
The Zombies First time nomination for the British rockers with hits "She's Not There", "Time of the Season" and "Tell Her No". Eligible since 1989. This leaves the Moody Blues as the last of the British Invasion class to never be nominated.
