The latest edition of Nintendo Direct (posted on Jan 23, 2013) brings a ton of new Nintendo related information. The Wii U is starting to show some promise as Nintendo now sees that they actually need games to attract new people. Satoru Iwata (President of Nintendo) once again updates us all on what we can expect in the future from Nintendo. There is lots to be shared here so let's get right into it.
On the hardware side of things, two much needed system updates for the Nintendo Wii U console are to come over Spring and Summer:
- Software will launch faster
- Return to Wii Menu faster
This will address some concerns that fans have had since the launch of the system. We also got some updates on games that were announced but are not yet released. "Bayonetta 2" seems to be going along well in development, "Pikmin 3" will now have a in-game screenshot feature for easy sharing to the Miiverse community and there are confirmed to be screenshots of the latest "Super Smash Bros." game for Wii U at Nintendo's E3 conference this year. There was also new footage shown for "The Wonderful 101".
Miiverse, Nintendo's platform to share messages, thoughts, art, ect, is getting also getting some enhancements in the future:
- Ability to create user communities
- More than one official community per title
- Usability improvements
- Add filtering function
- Browse Miiverse from smartphones this spring (browser type experience)
- Smartphone app in the future
This year marks the 30th year anniversary of the Famicom (Japanese Nintendo Entertainment System) and there is a nice promotion going on to celebrate. Select games will be offered at $0.30 on a month to month basis. Buying these games discounted will allow for easy transfer to the Wii U after buying on the Wii Virtual Console and reduced prices afterwards since you will have transferred your Virtual Console version.
- Jan - "Balloon Fight"
- Feb - "F-Zero"
- March - "Punch-Out" featuring Mr. Dream
- April - "Kirby's Adventure"
- May - "Super Metroid"
- Jun - "Yoshi"
- Jul - "Donkey Kong"
The idea of this is to offer current Virtual Console games on your Wii at a discount to transfer to your Wii U. Once this is done, any Wii game transferred to the Wii U grants you a discounted price on the Wii U enhanced version of the game, when released.
Last but certainly not least, fans of Nintendo got treated to news of brand new games to come. It was mentioned that there will not be any brand new games planned for the months January or February. With that being said, here's a peak of what we can expect from March onward.
- New "Mario" Game (presumably a 3D one like "Super Mario Galaxy")
- New "Mario Kart"
- Nintendo Wii U Party Game
- "Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem"
- Wii U Zelda Game
- "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" HD Remake
- New Yoshi Game (made in the style of "Kirby's Epic Yarn")
Nintendo's line-up for the Wii U is looking stronger and stronger. The entire video detailing all of this has been attached for you convenience It's a lot to take in, but from the looks of all this, Nintendo may just be prepared for a brighter future after all.
