Nintendo to repair Wii consoles bricked by Wii System Menu 4.2 for free

The Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo recently released the 4.2 system update for the Nintendo Wii. Although it was designed to combat modded systems, numerous owners of non-tampered units are reporting that Wii System Menu 4.2 has “bricked” their Nintendo Wii consoles.

Nintendo responded quickly to the complaints and offered the following statement to those unfortunate enough to have their Nintendo Wiis rendered useless after the 4.2 update. Here is the statement provided on the official Nintendo forum:

Some of you have reported problems with your Wii console after updating to the Wii System Menu 4.2. The symptoms most people are describing usually occur when the Wii has been modified. However, some of you also mention your system has never been modified.

We'd like to help get your system working properly again. If you're experiencing problems with your Wii console after downloading Wii System Menu 4.2, and you believe your system has not been modified, please give us a call. If we find that you have a normal system and the update caused your system to not work, we'll repair it at no charge.

Please call our Customer Service Department at your earliest convenience, 1-800-255-3700. We are open 6 AM to 7 PM, Pacific Time, 7 days a week.

Nintendo is expecting a big surge in hardware sales for the Nintendo Wii this holiday season after a $50 price cut. It is therefore in their best interests to resolve this issue promptly.

I honestly didn't get any problems with my Wii after the 4.2 update. Was it only supposed to be targeting tampered consoles? Either way, I think that's very adult of Nintendo to own up to the mistake and what's more, providing a fix for those systems affected for free.

Their method of updating boot2 was very irresponsible. They most likely knew it would brick some legitimate wii's (since everyone else knew it would). Completely childish in my opinion.

My Wii had issues from an earlier update (the one for SD cards). It had issues with the Wii Shop Channel and Formatting, but still played games. Everywhere I looked people only had this problem if they modded, but I never did. 4.2 broke my system and they set it up for free repair, pending if they find any worrisome modifications. They won't, but I'm glad it generally got my Wii fixed, because it's been problematic due to their software for a while.
