The 3DS and Wii U versions of Nintendo's hugely successful Super Smash Bros. franchise have been a long time coming, and many fans have been eagerly anticipating any news that may let them know when they will finally be able to play these games in person. Masahiro Sakurai, the game's director, revealed during a special Nintendo Direct earlier this evening, that the 3DS version will be available even earlier than most fans may have expected. The rumors regarding a delay for the Wii U version also appear to be false.
As for the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros., Sakurai stated that it will launch sometime this summer, though we don't have any concrete information beyond that. Its Wii U counterpart has a vague “winter 2014” launch window, which would put it at the tail end of this year, possibly launching within a few days of Christmas. Both versions share the same roster and play mechanics, though certain stages and game modes will vary between the two. We'll have more information regarding these release dates as they become available.
