Nintendo made a lot of announcements during this morning's Nintendo Direct, but one of the stranger ones was NES Remix, which is available on the Wii U as of now. This collection takes several classic NES titles and offers new challenges, such as getting a hole-in-one on Golf. Remix also offers a few bizarre changes to beloved titles such as Donkey Kong and Excitebike.
Several “remixed” levels from Super Mario Bros. were shown in today's trailer. These levels may require the player to complete the level backwards, or without the ability to see the platforms they are walking on. Another remix gives the game a silhouette effect, a la Limbo. The remixed version of Donkey Kong has players controlling Link, who presumably cannot jump, making it much more difficult for players to avoid the falling barrels. While these are essentially just ROM hacks, it is a neat concept for Nintendo to take part of. If this proves successful, we may be seeing many more remixes of classic games in the future.
NES Remix is now available on the Wii U eShop and is priced at $14.99.
