According to the report, Nintendo project manager Roger Langford said the HD update of the GameCube juggernaut The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker could help boost sales of the beleaguered WiiU.
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD will be a part of a special WiiU console bundle, which Nintendo hopes will spark sales of the handheld console.
Langford also said that the re-release of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker could introduce the title to gamers who may have never owned a GameCube or somehow missed out on playing the game the first go around, while bringing Zelda enthusiasts to the WiiU.
“It is the perfect time for Zelda fans to discover Wii U,” Langford said. “For many Zelda fans, this is the first time that they’ll discover Wind Waker, and we’re treating the game as a triple-A new release.”
Nintendo hopes the re-release of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker can live up to the success of the Nintendo 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time.
“Ocarina of Time 3D performed positively on Nintendo 3DSm, and we’re looking to replicate this success with The Wind Waker HD,” Langford said.
The WiiU has struggled to gain footing since its release, with some retailers pulling the console from its shelves, so Nintendo may need the Wind Waker experiment to work out.
