Nintendo dubs 2013 "Year of Luigi"

Satoru Iwata (President of Nintendo), began this morning’s Nintendo Direct wearing a Luigi hat. He explained that Luigi was going to be featured prominently in a few of this year’s titles, and referred to 2013 as “The Year of Luigi”. Along with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Nintendo is also planning a new Mario & Luigi RPG, as well as some extensive downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, is a brand new RPG coming to the 3DS, which will take place in Luigi’s dreams. While Mario makes his way through his brother’s imagination, the player can interact with Luigi on the touchscreen to disturb his sleep. Actions such as touching his nose or pulling on his moustache will alter the dream world, allowing Mario access to new areas. Iwata also stated that, because it’s a dream, Luigi may appear uncharacteristically brave or powerful in this upcoming title. While no solid release date was given, it is scheduled to launch sometime this summer.

DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U was also announced this morning, and will involve Luigi on a solo adventure. Iwata stated:

This downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U will change the existing eighty plus courses into all new courses. By using this design, we are currently developing a new adventure, starring Luigi

Iwata referred to this DLC as New Super Luigi U, stating that the word “Bros.” has been omitted due to Mario’s absence. No pricing or release date for this content was given, though it is set to launch during the “Year of Luigi”.
