Nintendo 3DS update adds Nintendo Network ID, Miiverse and unlimited transfers

Nintendo delivered a new update to the Nintendo 3DS on Tuesday that unifies network IDs on the Wii U and the handheld plus support for the Miiverse and better support for transferring downloaded games between systems.

The update allows users to register a Nintendo Network ID to their Nintendo 3DS system. The same Nintendo Network ID used on the Wii U can also be used on the Nintendo 3DS to combine Nintendo eShop balances and Wish Lists. A Nintendo Network ID will be required to download free content, like game demos, from the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

Miiverse support has also been added. It does require that the 3DS be connected to the internet for the full Miiverse experience of posting and reading messages online but an offline mode is available as well that allows users to queue up to three posts.

Finally, the update now allows users to transfer all of their content to different Nintendo 3DS systems an unlimited number of times, once every seven days. Before the update, users could only perform a system-to-system transfer a total of five times.
