Sebastian Swartz, 9, a youngster from Brown County passed away today at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He had accidentally shot himself in the head on February 18th at his family’s home.
After finding a gun in his parent’s room, he began playing with it. The gun discharged after his 13-year-old sister tried to take it away from him. He was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital after the shooting.
Sebastian's father is an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan until he received a medical discharge. Sebastian’s father was at work and his mother was in the house during the accident.
Authorities said the gun was not locked away in a safe location.
Brown County citizens are left trying to understand how this tragedy could have occurred.
Swartz family members told Channel 9 News reporter Scott Wegener that Sebastian was removed from life support after being declared brain dead. He was a third grade student at Russellville Elementary.
The Brown County prosecutor’s office will examine the case and decide whether any charges will be filed.
