In CBS’s summer television series, Under the Dome by Steven King
provides a realistic situation that may occur during any unforeseen emergency. In the small town of Chester’s Mill, they provided nine situations that were so realistic that it was scary.
Originally, the community was trying to work together, but as time proceeded, negative thoughts started to plant seeds in others and certain characters tore the community upside down. Which character created the most damage? Big Jim. What can one say about ‘Big Jim’? He fits the typical con, full of confidence, gets loud when you question his authority, goes out of their way to gain your trust for their own needs. We run into those individuals in everyday life. But whoever decides to take charge during the emergency (good or bad), one can guarantee the following situations will occur.
Situation #1 During the store scene, money meant nothing. Although law enforcement attempted to have the community ration out their basic needs, the crowd became out of control when others tried to get more supplies.
Situation #2 The citizens were willing to kill for food that the restaurant stored in freezers.
Situation #3 Medications were so scarce to a point where people were stealing medications from others.
Situation #4 During emergencies, the limited resources created more problems. For example, there was not enough water to stop a fire which caused more damage.
Situation #5 Trash was piling up with no place to put it.
Situation #6 Cigarettes and other forms of addictions created a violent community.
Situation #7 Propane, gas, etc. were limited to keep equipment, vehicles, and homes running properly.
Situation #8 Citizen’s privacy rights were compromised.
Situation #9 Your safety in general was taken more seriously each day.
