Nikki Haley Governor of South Carolina says goodbye to hubby

Michael Haley, husband of Governor Nikki Haley, will be leaving on January 10, 2013 for Afghanistan with the South Carolina National Guard. This may be the first time the spouse of a sitting governor will serve in a combat zone. The unit will be at Camp Atterbury in Indiana for training prior to their leaving for Afghanistan.

Michael Haley is a Captain in the South Carolina National Guard serving with the 3-49th Agribusiness Development Team. The team will be advising the Afghan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation. They will be working with Afghan farmers, universities and government agencies.

Captain Michael Haley is a six-year Guard veteran with a background in business administration. He received his business degree from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

There is a strong military bond with the Haley family with Governor Haley’s brother being an Army major who served in the first Persian Gulf War.
