Fans of jazz vocalists should make plans to attend the unique event being put on this evening at Le Corusse Rouge. The Bakersfield Jazz Workshop will be presenting "Diva Night," a special jazz performance featuring four talented jazz vocalists from Bakersfield.
The idea for the show originated from the imagination of pianist Terry Cano, a BJW regular who drives all the way up from the Los Angeles area and donates his talent for free. Terry has frequently performed as a featured artist as well as in the BJW's open jam session.
During those experiences, he became more and more convinced that the vocalists who were showing up to sing at the jam sessions weren't getting the proper opportunity to display their talents, either by being relegated to the end of the jam session or by being forced to sing in the wrong keys. To address that, he came up with Diva Night, an evening of jazz showcasing the talents of four of our local jazz vocalists, Paula Einstein, Candace Freeman, Kama Ruby, and Lawanda Smith. The tunes cover a wide range of material, from classic jazz vocals up to Alicia Keys.
Backing the vocalists will be a stellar band consisting of Pat O'Connell (guitar), Glen Fong (Bass), Steve Eisen (trumpet), Mr. Cano (piano), and in a special guest appearance, Billy Paul (drums). Mr. Paul, also from the Los Angeles area, has an extensive background, having performed with Jack Sheldon, Carl Sanders, and more!
The show begins at 7:30 PM. For more information, please check the attached flyer. Le Corusse Rouge is located at 4647 White Lane, Bakersfield, CA.
