Girl Scout Troop 965 partnered up with Taylor Martial Arts on April 1, 2011 working jointly on a service project to create 1,000 origami cranes. The girls from Riverside and Moreno Valley met at Taylor Martial Arts and taught Shihan Dan Taylor’s students how to fold the paper cranes.
Together the group folded approximately 390 paper cranes helping to get the project well on its way to completion. Each crane bears a notation indicating the troop number sending the crane.
Girl scout and karate student, Erica Masters commented, “It is fun to learn to fold the cranes and then to teach the other students at Taylor Martial Arts. I really love that the cranes we’re making will be sent to Japan.”
The service project was coordinated by the San Gorgonio Council and involves girls throughout the Inland Empire,
The Japanese have a legend that anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will have their wish granted by a crane. The legend of the thousand origami cranes (Senbadsuru) inspired Japanese girl scouts to send cranes strung together to New York girl scouts following September 11th. Girl scouts from the Inland Empire decided to reciprocate the gift following the recent tragedy in Japan.
There are numerous resources online showing you how to fold a Japanese paper crane. If you want to donate your origami cranes to Troop 965’s project you can drop off your completed cranes at Taylor Martial Arts located at 24318 Hemlock Avenue, Suite G-4 in Moreno Valley. They will coordinate deliver to Troop 965 on your behalf.
