Founded in 2002, Boko Haram has been an organization that is against western civilization. It is an Islamist fundamentalist group that is a true believer in Sharia Law and will do anything to stop westernization in Nigeria . Founding leader Mohammed Yusuf would allow the attacks on schools and government buildings and the killings of Christians to be carried out in their name.
The Nigerian government carried out raids on the organization and killed Yusuf in 2009. It was in 2009 after the death of Yusuf and the emergence of Abubakar Shekau as the new leader that a rise in violence took place. Boko Haram works mostly out of the northeastern region of Nigeria.
Recently, the group has started to kidnap young girls and sell them into slavery. Some for a mere twelve dollars. The ages of the girls range from 11-15 years of age. The idea is that these girls should not be learning western teachings and thus should be punished for this crime.
In the last month some 300 young girls have been kidnapped and the sales have begun. Shekau has come out and taken responsibility for these crimes in the name Boko Haram. The region is in chaos and the police do not have the capability of finding these young girls and is requesting help from outside sources.
President Obama has been in contact with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and has offered the services of the United States to finding the kidnappers and prosecuting them. White House Spokesman Jay Carney has that this will include U.S. military personnel. Hostage negotiators were also mentioned in the talks.
The mass kidnappings have brought families and villagers pouring out into the streets demanding that something be done to recover the girls. World wide condemnation of the kidnappings and subsequent selling of some of the girls has brought this to the attention of everyone. Boko Haram is either going to have to get rid of the girls very soon or kill them. They will then have to go into hiding because if the U.S. military gets involved they will be hunt down like the dogs they are.
It is one thing to want to promote your religion but not at the expense of others. It is now up to the state of Nigeria to decide which way it wants to handle the situation and unfortunately it must do it quickly.
