Nigeria defeats Burkina Faso 1-0 in finals of African Cup of Nations

Nigeria defeats Burkina Faso 1-0 in the finals of the African Cup of Nations of 2013. This will be the third title for Nigeria as the Champion of Africa.

The Guardian reported on Sunday that Nigeria took the victory with a lone goal. The goal was made in the 40th minute of the match. The man of the hour for Nigeria was midfielder Sunday Mbah.

It was reported that Nigeria’s winger Jonathan Pitroipa was accidentally sent off with a red card in the semi-final against Ghana.

The referee of that semi-final game gave Pitroipa a second yellow for simulation or diving. It was later justified that the referee made a huge mistake and has been suspended for a “shambolic” performance.

It was also the first time Burkina Faso made the finals of the African Cup of Nations. They were the Cinderella story of the tournament this year until the loss in the finals.

The victory puts Nigeria in a spot to play in this summer’s Confederations Cup to be played in Brazil. The Confederations Cup is an eight team tournament that is held a year before the World Cup. All the champions from the different continents are the contenders of this tournament.
